Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday is the Christian observance commemorating Jesus' Last Supper, where he instituted Communion and washed his disciples' feet. It comes from the Latin word Mandatum, meaning commandment, recalls the night on which he was betrayed. There, he also gave them the "new commandment" to love one another. This day begins the Paschal Triduum, the three holy days leading to Easter.
Many churches hold special evening services that include foot-washing ceremonies and communion. During the service, the altar is also stripped. It is a solemn ritual where items are removed from the sanctuary, symbolizing Christ's betrayal and abandonment.
