Answer me quickly, Lord;
my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Psalm 143:7-9 We all have moments when it seems that our spirit fails us. Maybe it’s the hectic schedule and demands of work and life. Maybe it’s the day-to-day management of chronic pain or affliction or perhaps the sudden unexpected news of terminal illness or the death of a relationship. Maybe it’s the nagging sense that all is not well with our soul – that while things seem to be okay on the outside, they are uncertain where it counts, in our relationship with Jesus. The Psalms meet us in our need and remind us where to find help. They connect us to the Lord who alone heals the broken-hearted, the sick, the grieving, the disillusioned, the questioning. As we see on some advertising, for Jesus, there is no problem too big or too small for him to handle. With the Psalmist, try these steps for praying through a problem: 1. State the problem. Do not deny the nudging that something is wrong – admit to yourself that you need God. Even if you are not clear about what the problem is, God knows it. 2. Acknowledge God’s power to help and ask God to manifest that power in you. 3. Say out loud that you are entrusting your life to God and ask for direction. 4. Expect your prayer to be answered and watch for signs of God’s presence in your life. God’s response may surprise you. 5. Take action to confirm your trust in God. Lord, you are Holy above all others, and all of the strength that I need is in your hands. I am not asking, Lord, that you take this trial away. Instead, I simply ask that Your will be done in my life. Whatever that means, that is what I want. But I admit that it's hard, Lord. Sometimes I feel like I can’t go on. The pain and the fear are too much for me, and I know that I don’t have the strength on my own to get through this. I know that I can come to you, Jesus, and that you will hear my prayer. I know that it is not your intent to bring me to this point just to leave me in the wilderness alone. Please, Lord, give me the strength that I need to face today so I don't have to worry about tomorrow. If you just give me the strength that I need today that is all I need. Keep me from sinning during this trial. Instead, help me to keep my eyes on you. You are the Holy Lord, and all of my hope rests in you. Thank you for hearing my prayer. In Jesus' name. Amen.
