The apostle James reminds us of the power of prayer for those who are sick.
13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5:13-16 Prayer tells God: "Look -- your Son, Jesus, died for _________. He rose to give _______ life. We beg you to act to make your forgiveness, your life, your salvation real in ___________." Prayer places us in the place of trust in God. It removes all strings. It acknowledges God's sovereignty. Prayer recognizes God as seeking nothing but our good and the good of those for whom we pray -- even when we do not understand God's ways. Today, let us pray for:
O merciful Father, you have taught us in your holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve the children of mortals: Look with pity upon the sorrows of your servants for whom our prayers are offered. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy, nourish their souls with patience, comfort them with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them, and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
